Q&A WITH KITTY K

Question: How did you go at Miss Pinup New Zealand this year?

Answer: I was in the Top 3 with the lovely Velvet DeColette & Mrs. Greatnews. I won People's Choice Pinup, which I'm super happy about and means a lot to me.

Question: What was the best part about your journey with Miss Pinup NZ?

Answer: Friendship. I was blown away by the support that I received from my friends and I met some lovely people along the way. I especially enjoyed hanging out with my pinup buddy on the day - Miss Lulu Jade.

Question: How did you build up the courage to get on stage and do everything you did?

Answer: I've entered a few Pinup pageants over the last year or so and have gradually built up confidence to get out there. I also had some coaching with Bonita (http://www.dangerdoll.co.nz/) who helped me with my stage presence and posing. Sometimes you've just got to 'fake it 'til you make it'.

Question: What was your inspiration for your talent?

Answer: Not being naturally talented, I struggled to find something I could do on stage for 2 minutes. I made cocktails in my MPUNZ entry video, so this seemed like a good idea for my talent too. I chose to make a Tequila Moonrise as this competition is held around Halloween and is the only cocktail I could find with Tequila and Sailor Jerry in it. I'm not sure whether this was lost on the crowd.

Question: How do you feel about the whole experience?

Answer: I had such an awesome experience. I'm so pleased I was selected to take part in this competition, and got the chance to get up on stage and try my best to wow the judges.

Question: Would you recommend doing it and would you do it again?

Answer: Absolutely! Not only was I pushed out of my comfort zone, but I made new friends and had a really fun time putting all of my outfits together for the competition.

Question: What were you most nervous of doing?

Answer: My talent! Oh my gosh!! This competition really puts you ‘out there’ and you have nowhere to hide when you’ve got 2 minutes on stage and everyone is looking at you. I’m so glad I did something fun that had the audience clapping and singing along.

Question: Was it expensive to do?

Answer: It was for me, but it doesn’t have to be… I used the competition as an excuse to buy some shoes that I’d been eyeing up for a while. I also borrowed heaps of accessories from my friends to help me keep some of the costs down (thanks guys xx)

Question: Where on earth do you get your amazing evening dresses?

Answer: My dress was made by a very talented dressmaker in Christchurch called Debbie Clydesdale. She was recommended by a couple of friends and is lovely to work with.

Question: What did you learn most about yourself and pinup through your experience?

Answer: I learnt that I can get on stage in front of many people and feel proud of myself for doing it. I’m actually quite shy and awkward, it has taken a lot of confidence building to get this far.

Question: Is there anything you’d do differently if you entered again?

Answer: I would have loved to have incorporated some vintage pieces. As a curvy gal, it’s difficult to find nice vintage outfits that look flattering.

Question: Where did you get your jewellery from?

Answer: The majority of my jewellery came from either Retro Resins or Lovisa.

Question: Where did you get the shoes with the flamingos on?

Answer: Irregular Choice! I wore these for my Beachwear section. They are my favourite shoes in the whole world and I've been waiting for an opportunity to buy them and Miss Pinup NZ was it!

Question: Did anything not go to plan?

Answer: I had planned to take a beach ball on stage which had a flamingo inside. Sadly, he got damaged in transit and wouldn't reflate.

Question: You seemed to have a big support crew with you, how many girls came up from Christchurch for the event?

Answer: I think there was around 20 people who were cheering for me when I was on stage, just some were louder than others ;-). I feel honoured to have had them all there and it really made the weekend special.

Question: Who was your biggest support?

Answer: I couldn't have done this event without the support of my husband, Stuart (aka Mr. Kaos). He pushed me to keep practicing my talent, has been actively promoting me for People's Choice Pinup, has been patient whilst I'm running around stressing, and has been encouraging me throughout the whole experience. The Canterbury Pinup Belles were also so supportive, and I love them all dearly.
